“Virgin Mary and Christ”, a signed lithograph from his “Biblia Sacra” Series, signed by the artist, Salvador Dali, has been donated to our Shrine of All Saints by Andrew Masterson. In 1963, Dali, an internationally known artist and favorite of both the avante-garde art world and the media, turned his attention and energies to the endlessly rich subject matter offered by the Holy Bible. The catalyst for this endeavor was the generous support and encouragement of Doctors Giuseppe and Mara Albaretto.
They commissioned Dali to illustrate a new edition of the Latin Vulgate Bible, a version which was prepared chiefly by St. Jerome at the end of the 4th century and was used by the Roman Catholic Church as the Authorized Version for its liturgies. The Doctors Albaretto claimed that the creation of these hundred and five mixed media paintings led the artist to God. They certainly forced Dali to study the Bible, at least portions of it, especially the Old Testament. And Biblia Sacra is considered a masterpiece.
